Dussehra is one of the main festivals of Hinduism, which is celebrated on the Dashmi date of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. This festival is celebrated with great pomp across the country. This festival of Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami. This festival gives the message of victory of truth over the untruth. In the year 2020 the festival of Dussehra will be celebrated on Sunday 25 October.
Ramlila is staged in various parts of India. It is said that Lord Rama killed Lanka King Ravana on the day of Vijayadashami. Ravana was a cruel and conceited ruler. He kidnapped Rama's wife Sita with cheating. Rama befriended Vanararaj Sugriva to free Sita from the clutches of Ravana. He crossed the ocean with the Vanar army to Lanka. A fierce war took place. In this war, all the brave warriors like Meghnad, Kumbhakarna, Ravana etc. were killed. Rama made Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana, his refuge, the king of Lanka and departed towards Ayodhya with wife Sita. A detailed view of these events is shown in Ramlila. By this, the dignity of Shri Ram is revealed as Purushottam.
Arms worship is also performed by the Kshatriyas on this day. In ancient times, kings used to leave for Rana Yatra, wishing victory on this day, because since ancient times people believed that victory is definitely found in any new work on this day.
