Karva Chauth

Karva Chauth Vrat is observed on the 4th day of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik Maas. This festival is considered very special for every married woman. On this day, married women observe a fast without water and food for the long life of husband and a happy married life. Karwa Chauth is also known as Karak Chaturthi in many places. This year the festival is on 04 November 2020.

Rules of Karva Chauth fast

This fast is kept from sunrise till the moon comes out. In this fast, it is compulsory to offer water to the moon after seeing it. In this fast mother-in-law gives her daughter-in-law a Sargi before sunrise. After eating Sargi, married women start their fast. On this fast, Lord Shiva is worshiped in the evening in the auspicious time before reaching the moon. After the moon comes, women open their fast by giving water to the moon, drinking water from their husband's hand and eating sweet.

Worship method of Karva Chauth Vrat

Wake up before sunrise and then have a meal given by your mother-in-law as a Sargi. Remember, nothing is taken for the whole day in this fast, then in the evening, this fast is opened by drinking water from the hand of her husband after offering the moon. Establish an earthen Karwa at sunset for worship. Also keep incense, lamp, sandalwood, roli, sindoor etc. in a plate. Light a lamp of ghee. Worship the Lord for about an hour before the moon comes out. After this, the daughter-in-law gets her blessing. and the mother-in-law blesses her to be an unbroken good fortune.

Married women first look at the moon through a sieve to open their fast and then immediately see their husband. This is because according to religious texts, on this day the moon is considered to be the representative of Lord Shiva or Lord Ganesha. In Hinduism, both these gods are highly respected. Therefore, since women are adorned as brides, and new brides are prohibited from looking directly at the elders of the family, the strainer used is seen as a veil that does not break the tradition. In the Karva Chauth evening, women offer water to the moon and then watch the moon and husband with a sieve. After this, she completes her fast by drinking water from her husband's hand.
