Naag Panchami

Nagas have been given an important place in Hinduism. The serpent who occupies the neck of one of the trinity is worshiped in Hinduism. The special festival of Naga worship is "Nag Panchami". According to Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva fulfills all desires by worshiping serpents on this day. This festival is celebrated every year on the 5th day of Shukla of Shravan month. This year Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Saturday, 25 July 2020.

According to mythological beliefs, the Naga species was born on the 5th day of the Shukla Paksha of Sawan month and that is why this day is celebrated as the festival of Nag Panchami.

On the day of Nag Panchami, people worship the snake as a deity. There is a special method of worship on this day. According to Garuda Purana, after bathing etc. on the morning of Nag Panchami, the devotees make a picture of Nag or install a statue on both sides of the main door of their house. After this, worship by offering milk, fruits and fragrant flowers to the serpent god.

Rudrabhishek is also very important on Nag Panchami. According to the Puranas, Sheshnag carries the weight of the earth on his head, so he must be worshiped. This day is also famous as Garuda Panchami and Garuda is also worshiped on this day along with the serpent god.

According to the Puranas, once Kalia Nag made the entire Yamuna River poisonous with its poison. The river water had become poisonous for the Braj people. Then Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, did a trick to solve the problem of Brijwasis. One day, he jumped into the Yamuna on the pretext of finding the ball and defeated Kalia Nag in the battle. After being defeated in the war, Kalia Nag withdrew all his venom from the river. That day was the fifth date of Sawan. In return, Lord Krishna gave him a boon that whoever feeds the snake god on the day of Panchami will remove all the sorrows of his life.

On the day of worship of the serpent god, serpents should not be fed with milk. The worshipers can give milk bath to Shivling. The feeding of snakes results in death of snakes. Feeding them in this way is like killing their god with their hands. That is why one should avoid making such mistake even by forgetting. This can be avoided by killing the creatures on the auspicious festival of faith and trust.
